Our history

Westwood traces back to 1925, when Asa Ambrister assembled roughly 82 acres along Kingston Pike into what the Knoxville Suburban Corporation named “Kingston Pike Heights.” Lots were auctioned off through the late 1920s, marketed for their mountain views and their proximity to the Cherokee Golf Course — one of the first Knoxville suburbs laid out for the automobile rather than the streetcar.

The Depression ended the Suburban Corporation, and in 1938 the newly formed Westwood Corporation took over the unsold lots, renaming the subdivision Westwood. Development picked up through the 1940s and 50s — including the Century Court homes built by Stuart Fonde — and continued as Bearden grew up around it. Westwood was annexed into the City of Knoxville in 1962.

The Westwood Homeowners Association was organized in 1973 to represent residents’ interests and has been the steady hand behind the neighborhood ever since — from securing R-1E residential zoning in 1988, to building Westwood Park on donated school property in 1992, to an ongoing effort to have the neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A hundred years on, Westwood remains what it was built to be: a quiet, tree-lined residential neighborhood minutes from the heart of Bearden.
